China Close-Up | From local delicacy to nationwide sensation: the evolution of Shaxian snacks
06:32
Originating in Shaxian district of Sanming, East China’s Fujian Province, the Shaxian snacks brand has evolved from a local street delicacy to a nationwide sensation in decades.
The secret to the success of Shaxian snacks was finding a niche market and a low-margin but high-volume business model, said Xi Jinping, then deputy Party chief of Fujian, during a visit to Shaxian in 1999. He called for expanding the snack industry.
Shaxian snacks swept through the streets of China and even gained popularity abroad. Today the franchise has about 88,000 locations nationwide, creating jobs for more than 300,000 people with a yearly turnover of about 55 billion yuan ($7.7 billion).
Why are Shaxian snacks so popular? How did a local delicacy become a nationwide sensation? Our host Tina visits Shaxian and finds out.
